1) Trans Mountain Expansion Project

ISSUE:

On Sunday, Prime Minister Trudeau met with Premier Notley and Premier Horgan to discuss the Trans Mountain pipeline project. Recently, Kinder Morgan announced that it was suspending work on the project, until it received assurances from the Federal and B.C. governments that it wouldn’t face further delays. This decision comes after Prime Minister Trudeau’s failed policies have contributed to the greatest decline in Canadian energy investment in 70 years – a loss of $80 billion - and resulted in more than 110,000 energy workers losing their jobs.

The Prime Minister also vetoed the approved Northern Gateway pipeline, and killed the Energy East pipeline with last minute rule changes and a regulatory standard that doesn’t apply to any other sector of the Canadian economy.

The Prime Minister also vetoed the approved Northern Gateway pipeline, and killed the Energy East pipeline with last minute rule changes and a regulatory standard that doesn’t apply to any other sector of the Canadian economy.

Trudeau has stated that his government plans to subsidize the project and table legislation to address the problem, but refused to release any details. The use of taxpayer dollars to backstop the Trans Mountain pipeline is more evidence of Justin Trudeau’s failed energy policy and does nothing to regain investor confidence in Canada’s economy.

The Alberta government has tabled legislation to restrict the flow of oil, gasoline and natural gas leaving the province in response to the B.C. government’s blockade of Trans Mountain. The Saskatchewan government has also said that it plans to side with Alberta and restrict the flow of oil to B.C.

KEY MESSAGES:

  • It’s essential to remember that the blame for this development rests squarely on the shoulders of Justin Trudeau.
  • Not only did he fail to take immediate action when the issue began, but he raised the stakes so high around Trans Mountain by cancelling other major pipeline projects that have been proposed
  • His carbon tax and new regulatory requirements in Bill C-69 have also driven out billions of dollars of investment and the thousands of jobs that go along with that.
  • And, now he is claiming that due to his failed policies, the only way for Trans Mountain to proceed is to spend taxpayer dollars.
  • Before Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister, energy projects were built without taxpayer support. Now he would have use believe that it is theonly way for them to go forward. That is a terrible indictment of his own record.
  • This isn’t just about Trans Mountain. This is an overall attempt to literally, in Justin Trudeau’s own words “phase out” the Canadian energy sector.
  • Conservatives will always stand up for our energy workers and we will undo the damage Justin Trudeau has done.

2) The Atwal Affair

ISSUE:

Yesterday, Trudeau’s national security advisor, Daniel Jean appeared before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security to deliver the non-classified information that was given to the media during Trudeau’s India trip. He claimed that it was his decision to brief the media in order to “debunk misinformation” that the RCMP, CSIS and High Commission knew about Atwal, had advised PMO against inviting him and PMO had ignored their advice.

Mr. Jean also confirmed that the coordinated effort to sabotage the Prime Minister’s reputation was not orchestrated by the Indian government. This means that in the House of Commons, on February 27th, Justin Trudeau lied to Canadians when he accused the Indian government of planting Atwal at his events.

Conservatives will continue to call for Justin Trudeau to apologize to Canadians and the Indian government for his lies.

KEY MESSAGES:

  • Justin Trudeau has failed, repeatedly, to be honest with Canadians about why a convicted attempted murderer was invited to his official events in India.
  • Yesterday, Justin Trudeau’s National Security Advisor debunked the Prime Minister’s theory that rogue elements in the Indian government were behind Jaspal Atwal’s presence at Government of Canada events in India.
  • The Prime Minister must withdraw the false accusations he made here in the House on February 27 and issue an apology to the Government of India.
  • Conservatives want to know, did the Prime Minister approve the release of false information about his India trip?
